I played N64 A LOT when I was younger, and I still play it today (just not quite as much). And although I played most of the classic games that you'd expect (Mario Kart, Goldeneye), one game that I could never get enough of was Star Wars EPISODE 1 RACER!
I sunk days into this game, playing all of the different characters and trying to beat my best times. I annoyed my friends because every time they came round to my house we had to play AT LEAST one game on this badboy. The weirdest thing was, I wasn't even a big fan of the Star Wars movies! Especially not the prequels. I genuinely think that this game might be the best thing that came from the prequels. Here's why:
Podracing was the best part of the prequels
Let's be honest, any scene with young Anakin in it was generally pretty annoying. But the podracing scene sticks in my mind as one of the most fun parts of the entire Star Wars franchise. It was fast-paced, cool (all of the podracer designs) and tense. This game manages to capture all of those elements very well.
They realised that young Anakin was annoying
Whoever made this game clearly didn't have George Lucas breathing down their neck telling them to make Anakin the star of this game. You'd barely notice he was there if it wasn't for the odd yelp in the background, which is just about bearable.
There's no Jar Jar Binks
I revisited this game before I wrote this blog post, just to double check this one. I'm pretty sure he's not there. Pretty sure (he's not exactly the kind of guy that would be good at hiding).
If you haven't checked this game out, please do. It has tight controls, fun maps, a good difficulty range and represents one of the more enjoyable aspects of the otherwise disappointing prequels.
